1898-04-12 (140lbs) Charlie McKeever w pts 20 Matty Matthews, Central Armory, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Referee: W. C. Kelley. Made at 140lbs, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that while Matthews withstood a great amount of punishment and was strong to the last he was generally outclassed by McKeever, who used both hands well to pick his punches accurately. Apart from a few slips from Matthews, neither went to the floor in what was a fast-paced contest that went all the way. For much of the time it was McKeever’s skill against Matthews’ durability, and while the latter fought back hard on occasion, especially with body blows, he was unable to find the punch that could end the contest inside the allotted time.

On winning McKeever claimed the title at the weight, but from there on in he fought at an increased poundage.
