1898-11-28 (104lbs) Mike Riley w pts 20 Charlie Exall, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England
1898-11-28 (104lbs) Mike Riley w pts 20 Charlie Exall, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Recognised as involving the English 104lbs title in some quarters despite being contested over two-minute rounds, the much taller Riley (104) started with the left while Exall (102) targeted the body. After crossing with a right in the eighth Riley had Exall over, and at the two-thirds stage he had built up a commanding lead. However, from there on the contest belonged to Exall as he was finally able to get to close quarters due to Riley beginning to tire. Unfortunately for Exall, having left it late, he was unable to reduce Riley’s lead enough to warrant the verdict.
Riley’s 104lbs claim was not taken too seriously after he was beaten at 102lbs by Exall on 29 May 1899.
