1898-12-05 (114lbs) George Slark w pts 20 Mike Goulding, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Made at 114lbs, while there was never much between them in the early part of the contest by the time they had reached the halfway stage Slark (113) was in control. Despite Slark never relinquishing his lead Goulding was always working hard, and even though he was brought down by a right to the head in the 14th he continued to look for a way through his rival’s defences. It was not forthcoming though, Goulding finishing up a gallant but wide loser.
Although boxing gossip credited Slark with a claim to the English title on his victory, due to Jim Williams and Harry Ware being ahead of him in the pecking order his claim never really got off the ground.
