1899-01-24 (102lbs) Joe Williams w co 3 (20) Harry Brodigan, Gymnastic Club, Stalybridge, England. Billed for the 102lbs championship of the north, the 18-year-old Williams (101) almost finished Brodigan (102) off in the opening round when flooring his man with a right to the jaw. Following a relatively quiet second both lads went for it in the third, and after hurting Brodigan with a solid blow to the head and feinting to the body Williams landed a right to the point that brought the contest to a conclusion.

A short while afterwards, having challenged all-England at the weight, Williams claimed the national title.
