1899-03-30 (126lbs) Tommy White w pts 20 Colorado Jack Dempsey, Rovers’ Wheel Club, Denver, Colorado, USA. Referee: Bat Masterson. Made at 126lbs, with both men thought to have been inside, White’s title claim at the weight was on the line in this one. This was backed up when the Rocky Mountain News reported that to stay in the contest against a national champion Dempsey performed well. At the finish both men were seemingly strong, with White a good winner on points, having scored 42 clean hits on Dempsey while taking just 18 in return. The paper went on to say that the 12th was the only round in which Dempsey had the upper hand, when taking the fight to White and scoring with some solid blows that left the latter looking distinctly uncomfortable. Throughout the remainder of the contest White used his left hand in rapier-like fashion to keep Dempsey at bay, his right being equally effective when required. There were no knockdowns.
