1899-11-01 (124lbs) Jack Gibson w co 1 (20) George Johnson, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Billed for the English 124lbs title, right from the opening bell both Gibson (123) and Johnson (122) were heavily engaged, and the latter was soon down following lefts and rights to the head and a hard left to the pit of the stomach. Twice more Johnson was dropped by blows to the body before a terrific right swing to the jaw sent him crashing down to be counted out. In just a few moments there had been more action seen in this contest than in some recent ones that had been played out.
