1900-01-15 (145lbs) Rube Ferns w disq 21 (25) Mysterious Billy Smith, Hawthorne AC, Buffalo, New York, USA. Referee: Ed McBride. In a match made at 145lbs, Ferns, who had been floored 15 times, was declared the winner by disqualification, thus taking over Smith’s claim at the weight. After continuously striking Ferns, badly cut around the eyes, with vicious body blows in the clinches, Smith was warned for going low but took no notice and paid the ultimate consequence. Although Ferns had given a wonderful exhibition of endurance, the majority of fans thought that Smith had been robbed.
