1901-01-15 (130lbs) Art Simms w pts 20 Eddie Gardner, Armory Theatre, Massillon, Ohio, USA. Referee: Ed McKean. With both men inside the stipulated 130lbs, Simms, whose American title claim at the weight was at risk, made a good start before Gardner began to share the points with him. Then, in the eighth, Simms was hurt by a body blow, and seeing that the referee was not going to allow a foul he went down for ‘nine’. Taking a breather, Simms went quiet for several rounds, but in the 13th he was fighting with renewed confidence and although unable to knock Gardner out the referee’s decision was his.

After stopping Crocky Boyle inside a round at the Avenue Theatre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 4 February, in a match made at 133lbs, Simms set sail for England, where he challenged all at 126 and 132lbs. However, unable to get a fight he returned to America.
