1901-02-25 (118lbs) Johnny Thomas w co 6 (25) Sailor Richardson, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Given some publicity as an English 118lbs title bout, although not given general billing as such, Thomas (117½) made a solid start, nearly sending Richardson (118) to the boards in the third round before giving the latter a real battering in the fifth. The fight ended in the sixth after Richardson, who had been dropped twice by swinging rights to the head, was counted out on the second occasion.

Following this, other men to challenge all England at 118lbs were Spike Robson (May 1902), Andrew Tokell (July 1902), Fred Delaney (August 1902), Bill King (September 1902) and Cockney Cohen (October 1902).
