1901-04-01 George Chrisp w co 8 (20) Ben Taylor, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: Eugene Corri. Effectively putting up his British title claim against the 20-year-old Taylor in a catchweight contest, Chrisp showed up well when following up left jabs to the face with heavy rights under the heart to ultimately subdue the erratic youngster. Although showing himself to be a heavy puncher Taylor was easy to hit, and in the fourth he was down twice from right-hand counters. As strong as ever in the fifth, despite being cautioned for using the illegal pivot punch Taylor held his own against Chrisp for the next couple of rounds before being dropped by a right to the jaw at the end of the seventh and saved by the bell. Taylor seemed fine when coming out for the eighth, but was soon sent down for the full count after right-lefts to the point had opened him up.
In his very next contest Chrisp (170lbs) was knocked out in 11 rounds by the 154lbs Philadelphia Jack O'Brien at Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle on 20 May. He later forfeited any right he had to the English title when kayoed by Jack Mullen in a non-descript 15 rounder, not contested under championship conditions, at the same venue on 23 February 1903. While Mullen declined to claim the English title on the result, Chrisp announced his retirement.
