1901-04-29 (108lbs) Jack Guyon w pts 10 Wag Hampton, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Harry Cooper. The final of a 108lbs English championship belt competition, saw Guyon ultimately outscore Hampton with the use of a long left lead, but it was only in the latter rounds that he really got on top. Earlier, Hampton had made things tough for his rival with strong two-handed bursts of fighting, and although he hurt Guyon at times he was unable to keep it up.
Despite it being made up of two-minute rounds, Guyon’s claim at 108lbs was accepted in many quarters.
Following on from this, Jack Walker, who claimed in May that he could now make 108lbs, and Buck Shine (who won a championship competition when outpointing Johnny Hughes over six rounds at Wonderland on 1 June), also laid claim to the title.
