1901-07-22 (106lbs) Harry McDermott w pts 20 Charlie Exall, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: George Dunning. Billed for the English 106lbs title, £50-a-side, and a £127 purse, McDermott forced the fight straight from the bell, and despite being perplexed by Exall’s bobbing-and-weaving tactics he continued with his attack. Exall certainly had a plan, dropping McDermott in the fourth after landing heavily to the wind. However, McDermott was soon surging back, almost having Exall over with right-hand smashes to the head in the tenth. Twice after that Exall was saved by the bell, with only his cleverness and gameness keeping him going, and in the final session just when it seemed that he would finally succumb he denied all of McDermott’s efforts to much applause.
