1901-12-17 (170lbs) Wild Bill Hanrahan w co 1 (25) Marvin Hart, Empire AC, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Referee: Tim Hurst. Reportedly carrying the American 170lbs championship, Hanrahan, who was out of the blocks quicker than Hart, soon had the latter on the floor from a right-hand smash to the back of the neck. Getting up in a dazed condition Hart took another hurtful blow to the body before Hanrahan sent in a left to the same region, following it up with a right hook to the jaw that sent the American to the floor to be counted out. All over after about one and a half minutes, the winner claimed the title on the result.

Hanrahan's claim gained support in the 16th January edition of the Sporting Life when he was recognised as the world champion at the weight.
