1902-03-07 (170lbs) Joe Choynski w co 5 (25) Wild Bill Hanrahan, Empire AC, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Referee: George Siler. Defending his 170lbs title claim in this one, Hanrahan started well when having Choynski over in the first following a solid right swing to the neck. Regardless, after Choynski got to his feet apparently unhurt he quickly regained his composure. Although Choynski was picking his punches well in the next couple of sessions, in the fourth he was forced to take several blows to the jaw without return and appeared tired at the bell. The fifth began with a heavy exchange of blows before Hanrahan became wild and inaccurate as Choynski found him with hurtful right hands. With both men tiring it was ultimately Choynski who found the right punches at the right time, culminating in a left-right to the jaw that sent Hanrahan down to be counted out.
While Choynski picked up his old 170lbs title claim as a result of the fight, shortly afterwards, on 18 April, his rival sadly passed away following a bout of pneumonia. Hanrahan had been ready to enter the ring when the doctor discovered he was running a temperature of 104, which hospitalised him for several days prior to his death.
