1902-07-25 Denver Ed Martin w pts 15 Bob Armstrong, Crystal Palace Grounds, Sydenham, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. Billed for the ‘black’ world championship it was quickly apparent that Martin was the better stylist of the two men, especially when using smart footwork to avoid Armstrong’s rushes while sending in pile-driving left jabs. In the fifth round Martin’s better work paid off when he dropped Armstrong with a heavy right uppercut, but he was lucky to get away without a warning when he hit the latter who was still on the floor. Although Armstrong’s powers of recovery were good he could not hold off Martin indefinitely, and in the 11th a right to the jaw had him down again. Despite Armstrong being second best over the remaining four sessions Martin was unable to take further advantage, having to settle for the points decision.
