1902-08-18 (165lbs) George Gardner w rtd 17 (20) Jack Root, Salt Palace Saucer Track, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Referee: Harry Hinds. Made at 165lbs, with both men inside, whatever claim at the weight Root had should have passed to Gardner on the result. Ignoring solid jabs to his cut-up face Gardner continued to pound the body, having Root in serious bother in the seventh round. Thereafter, with Gardner on top, Root was again belted to the deck in the 16th. Down again three more times in the 17th after taking more terrific punishment, Root was finally put out of his misery when his corner threw in the towel with their man still on the canvas.
Not really considering himself to be a champion of the new weight class, Gardner continued to fight among the heavyweights before being matched with Marvin Hart.
