1902-09-15 (144lbs) Tom Woodley w pts 11 (10) Eddie Connolly, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Tom Goodwin. Billed as a fight to decide the world 144lbs title, regardless of the fact that it was not contested under full championship conditions it did not stop Woodley from claiming the English title at the weight on winning. However, on reading the Sporting Life fight report it would seem that Connolly was robbed as he fought Woodley all over the ring at times, and while there were no knockdowns before the end of normal time he appeared to have landed most of the heavy punches. With the tenth undoubtedly being the best round of the fight, both men having gone hammer and tongs, the referee, considering it even, asked them box another session. In the decider, having had Woodley over from a hard body punch and fighting on even terms Connolly still lost.
