1903-01-01 (136lbs) Joe Gans w disq 11 (20) Gus Gardner, National AC, New Britain, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Mr Willis. Billed for the title at 136lbs, a weight that Gans was more comfortable with at this stage of his career, both men were inside the limit. It did not take Gans long to get on top, his blocking and countering especially good, and in the eighth he put Gardner down four times and then twice more in the tenth. With Gardner under a lot of pressure, the 11th round saw him wrestling Gans to the ground having already kneed him a few times. Following this and earlier misdemeanours, Gardner was thrown out.
