1903-02-28 (142lbs) Jack Nelson w pts 20 Tom Ireland, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Contested at 142lbs, it became clear that Nelson (141) would be making the body his target for the night, while Ireland (142½) was always dangerous with right-hand counters. In the seventh Ireland was dropped by a heavy left to the ribs, but after gamely coming back he was fighting as hard as Nelson at the bell. Both men went well for the next few rounds, but when Ireland began to tire from his exertions in the 13th Nelson stepped up a gear when beginning to land more frequently on both the head and body. In the 17th Nelson had Ireland over again, but was unable to finish him off despite hitting him with everything he had. Although the Londoner surprisingly came back refreshed in the 18th, making it to the final bell, the decision was a formality.

On winning, Nelson automatically took over from Ireland at the weight before concentrating on his 140lbs title claim as the 142lbs weight class went on hold.
