1903-12-29 (129/130lbs) Young Corbett w rsc 16 (20) Eddie Hanlon, Hayes Valley AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Ed Graney. Billed for the world featherweight title at 129lbs, 6pm weigh-in, at no time was Corbett’s 130lbs claim at risk, even when he was dropped by Hanlon (128) in the seventh round, and it was only the latter’s defence that saved him from being put away. For most of the time it was a rearguard action for Hanlon, but in the 15th after Corbett (129) dropped him for ‘eight’ on getting up the former took terrific punishment. It was more of the same in the 16th before the referee intervened on the 1.40 mark to rescue Hanlon who was in a bad way. Unable to stand up, Hanlon had to be carried from the ring to the dressing room where he thankfully recovered.
