1904-01-04 (122lbs) Abe Attell drew 10 Harry Forbes, Tomlinson Hall, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Referee: James Ryan. With both men inside the weight, Attell successfully defended his 122lbs claim in a contest that saw clever boxing at its best. Attell showed remarkable jabbing ability whether going backwards or forwards, coupled with great blocking technique, while Forbes was a good opponent from start to finish. The Indianapolis Journal reported that Forbes seemed slow in starting, but as the bout progressed he mixed it with Attell, having the better of the exchanges on several occasions. Unable to hurt his rival, Attell’s lack of power was put down to the bigger than normal gloves in use. As strong as a bull, Forbes staggered Attell in the sixth round with a right to the jaw, and at that stage of the contest the latter looked tired. However, the final session saw a re-energized Attell pound Forbes all over the ring with jabs and uppercuts to leave the latter extremely weary.
Following this, the pair immediately went into negotiations to meet over the 20-round route the following month.
