1904-06-03 (138/140lbs) Jimmy Gardner w rsc 6 (6) Buddy Ryan, Battery D Armory, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Referee: Joe Pollock. Articled at 137lbs, 5pm weigh-in, by his victory Gardner claimed the ‘white’ 138/140lbs title despite the contest being scheduled for just six rounds. It was Gardner’s fight all the way, with left jabs consistently hitting the target to open Ryan up, and in the fourth round the latter was staggering around prior to the bell coming to his aid. After a reasonable fifth, when Ryan was badly hurt by a body blow in the sixth the referee called the fight off.

With no weights reported it is unclear whether Gardner’s third meeting with Patsy Sweeney (w rtd 4 at the Pastime AC, The Coliseum, Manchester, New Hampshire on 4 July) involved his ‘white’ title claim, but there is every chance that it did.
