1907-01-28 (128lbs) Seaman Hayes w pts 15 Boss Edwards, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Made at 128lbs, right from the opening bell it could be seen that Edwards (127) would have problems in dealing with the ever-aggressive Hayes (127). Even after taking some thumping blows to the head Hayes was scoring heavily to the body, having Edwards over for a short count when landing solidly in the second round. It was Edwards using the ring well against Hayes’ bulldog persistence. Ahead on points at the halfway stage Hayes seemed to get stronger as the bout progressed, and following a sensational eighth round that was full of hard hitting on both sides he continued to add to his lead throughout the remaining sessions.
Regardless of the fact that no title billing was attached to the contest, Hayes continued to be recognised by many as being the English champion at the weight after his victory.
