1907-08-22 (120lbs) Owen Moran w co 18 (20) Young Pierce, Christian Street Gymnastic Club, Liverpool, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. Billed for the world 120lbs title, Moran (116) made a solid start to give Pierce (120) little rest, driving him all over the ring and sending him heavily into the ropes at times. It was not until the 11th round that Pierce began to show, and for three sessions he was giving as good as he was getting, if not more. However, by the end of the 13th Pierce’s left eye was beginning to close. Not being a man to let an advantage slip Moran pounded away at the damage before dropping the American with a terrific right to the jaw at the end of the 17th. Saved by the bell, Pierce, who was in no fit state to continue, should not have been allowed off his stool for the 18th but after gamely coming out to take his medicine a heavy left hook eventually dropped him for the full count.
Despite being awarded a 120lbs championship belt by the citizens of Birmingham on 1 July 1908, with Moran soon fighting at heavier weights the weight class faded in Britain when the NSC introduced the new weight limits on 11 February 1909.
