1908-04-20 (145/147lbs) Harry Lewis w co 4 (12) Honey Mellody, Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Listed in the Ring Record Book as a title fight, the Boston Post stated that the contest did not involve the championship with both men making 147lbs. However, with many feeling that 147lbs should be the welter limit Lewis looked to capitalise on his claim at that weight when securing an early lead over Mellody. In the fourth round, having decided to wind it up, Lewis went in with a series of hard blows to head and body, eventually dropping Mellody to the canvas where he was counted out.

A few days later, on 27 April, at the City Hall, Augusta, Maine, Lewis met Larry Conley (nd-w co 3) in what was a six rounder, but with the loser articled to make 142lbs the Daily Kennebec Journal confirmed that Lewis’ title claims had been at risk.
