1908-10-19 (142lbs) Young Joseph w pts 15 Corporal Bill Baker, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Recognised as an English 142lbs title fight although not advertised as one, Joseph (140¾) was soon into his stride against the big-punching Baker (140) who concentrated on body shots to bring the champion down. By the ninth Baker’s blows were beginning to have an effect on Joseph, and in the tenth the corporal was going even stronger before the latter came back at him in the 11th. With Joseph weakening, from there on in he just about held up against the rib-bending punches of the much stronger Baker to justify the win.
