1909-07-13 (133lbs) Battling Nelson nd-l pts 10 Ad Wolgast, Naud Junction Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Made at 133lbs for the world title, albeit being a no-decision bout, with both men safely making the weight according to the Los Angeles Times it was Wolgast who took the eye throughout the remainder of the contest after an even opening round. Whether it was fighting or boxing Nelson met his match in Wolgast, who ripped in lefts and rights at will, and even when the champion charged he had the ability to step back and counter. Beaten decisively, Nelson’s face was badly marked and swollen.
Although only a Memphis, Tennessee eight-rounder at the Athletic Club, Nelson knocked out Eddie Lang in the last round on 21 January 1910. The Memphis Daily Mail reported that with both men inside 133lbs, Nelson risked his title.
