1909-09-09 Jack Johnson nd-w pts 10 Al Kaufman, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ed Smith. Despite being a no-decision bout, although Johnson’s title was at stake Kaufman (191), unable to take advantage of his opportunity, landed very few punches throughout the contest. At times Johnson (209) appeared to be taking it easy, but when he did open up Kaufman was often in distress. With the fight at an end the referee stated to the newspaper men present that while he could not give a verdict Johnson was the better man, having outboxed and outpunched Kaufman in virtually every round.

Just a matter of days before taking on Stanley Ketchel, Johnson met Gunboat Smith in a four-round exhibition bout at the Seal Rock House, San Francisco on 11 October. According to the New York Herald the champion was floored and badly dazed in the fourth, whereupon his manager cut the round short.

Earlier, on 28 September, at the Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, Sam Langford forced the Dixie Kid to retire inside five rounds of a defence of his ‘black’ title claim.
