1910-02-22 (133lbs) Ad Wolgast w rsc 40 (45) Battling Nelson, Point Arena, Richmond, California, USA. Referee: Ed Smith. Made at 133lbs, the title changed hands after 40 tremendous rounds of slugging when Nelson (133) was finally ground down, being magnificently brave to the end. According to old-timers, Nelson, blinded, battered and unable to walk properly received the worse beating ever seen in those parts. Only once in the fight did Nelson have a chance, when staggering and knocking Wolgast (132¼) down in the 22nd round, but after that it was all one-way traffic. Saved by the bell in the 37th, Nelson was smashed to the floor in the 39th before being rescued by the referee in the 40th session when ready to fall after taking a heavy right to the jaw. Afterwards, the referee stated that he stopped the contest to save Nelson from a certain knockout defeat.
