1911-01-27 (118lbs) Digger Stanley nd-drew 10 Frankie Burns, National SC, New Amsterdam Opera House, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Patsy Haley. Although made at 117lbs in order to protect Stanley’s world title claim at 118lbs, I have included it on the basis that had Burns won inside the distance he would have undoubtedly claimed the championship at that weight. Burns already saw himself as a claimant at 116lbs, possibly due to his win over Young O’Leary (nd-w co 7 at the Olympic AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York on 6 September 1910), but at that moment in time it counted for little.

The fight itself was poor, with too much mauling and holding. Stanley was also guilty of illegal head-work and use of the elbows. While Stanley found the target more than Burns did, there were very few good punches thrown, with much of the action being at close quarters.
