1913-01-22 (145lbs) Wildcat Ferns nd-drew 15 Al McCoy, South Wayne Avenue Gym, Dayton, Ohio, USA. The Dayton Journal reported both men as being inside 145lbs, which automatically put Ferns’ title claim at the weight at risk. McCoy, the future world middleweight title claimant at 158lbs, could also have taken over at 145lbs had he produced a winning punch, but despite both men showing much cleverness neither was ever in any danger of a knockout defeat. Early on McCoy’s peculiar style bothered Ferns, but once the latter overcame that the fight evened itself up, and apart from the New Yorker’s right eye being badly cut in the 11th round neither man was otherwise marked.
