1913-12-02 (142lbs) Johnny Kid Alberts nd-w co 6 (10) Phil Cross, Atlantic Gardens AC, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Billy Moore. Contested at 142lbs, Alberts (141½) made a cracking start with body punches doubling Cross (140¾) up in the opening two rounds before heavy right swings to the jaw saw the later take two counts of ‘seven’ in the third. Somehow getting through the fourth, despite being all over the place according to the New York Times' report, Cross came back well in the fifth, landing solidly with straight lefts to the body. Although Cross seemed to be right back in the fight when forcing matters in the sixth, after being again caught by a hard right swing to the head he crashed down, his head striking the ring floor heavily, and was counted out.
In a contest that had been billed as one which would bring about a championship candidate, the Lowell Sun reported that Alberts had claimed the title.
