1914-01-01 Gunboat Smith w co 15 (20) Arthur Pelkey, Daly City Arena, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jim Griffin. Billed for the ‘white’ title, the smaller man took over Pelkey’s title claim when knocking him out in the 15th round. Although the fight was fairly even up to the sixth, after that Smith was never in danger as he danced around Pelkey while sending in lefts and rights to the Canadian’s head and body. Pelkey, who was slow and cumbersome, was a big disappointment to many, seldom taking the fight to Smith and lacking the experience to corner his man. In the 15th Smith feinted with the left before sending in a terrific right to the jaw that dropped Pelkey in a heap. Up at ‘nine’ Pelkey was a sitting target, and a right-hand smash to the back of his head sent him down on his face to be counted out.
