1914-01-24 (147lbs) Tom McCormick w disq 6 (20) Waldemar Holberg, West Melbourne Stadium, Melbourne, Australia. Referee: Ernie Fullalove. Billed as a championship bout at 147lbs by the local promoter, but not recognised as such in Sydney, by his victory McCormick took over Holberg’s claim at the weight. According to the Mirror of Life the clever McCormick (145¼) totally outclassed Holberg (145¼) from the opening bell, and even at an early stage it could be seen that it would only be a matter of time before the latter would be at his mercy. Holberg, a bustling, determined fighter, could do nothing with McCormick, being outboxed with ease. In vain he tried to batter his way through the Irishman’s defence, but after he struck a palpably low blow he was immediately disqualified. Summing up the fight, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Holberg gave the worst display of foul fighting that had ever been seen in Melbourne before being thrown out.
