1914-03-11 (145lbs) Spike Kelly nd-w pts 10 Lee Barrett, Turner Hall, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: Harry Stout. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that with both fighters in trim neither was expected to bend the scale set at 145lbs. Defending his claim at the weight, Kelly had the power, stiff, jolting blows sending Barrett back on his heels at times, but unable to drop his opponent he only had him in distress during the last two rounds. Kelly could even have lost had it not been for Barrett’s sportsmanship. Having gone low in the seventh the referee admonished Kelly and asked Barrett whether he wished to continue, but the latter gamely declined the opportunity when saying that he would prefer to battle on.
