1916-01-17 (142lbs) Ted Kid Lewis nd-w pts 10 Kid Graves, The Auditorium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. With both men inside 142lbs at 3pm their title claims were on the line, but although Lewis (140½) had Graves (142) beaten from the second round onwards he was unable to find a finishing punch. Despite Graves occasionally worrying Lewis, with him being consistently battered against the ropes it seemed a certainty that he would be eliminated from the title race before eventually making it to the final bell.

Even though Graves’ title claim was greatly diminished after this contest he continued to style himself as the 145lbs champion.
