1917-06-06 (145lbs) Jack Britton nd-drew 10 Ted Kid Lewis, Future AC, The Coliseum, St Louis, Missouri, USA. The St Louis Globe Democrat gave this as a match at 145lbs, which saw Britton again putting his title on the line against his main rival. Being a no-decision contest it was obvious that to lift the title Lewis would have to win inside the distance, but Britton made sure that by using every inch of the ring the Englishman would not get the opening he would have wished for. The paper reported that although there were no knockdowns it was Lewis who did the main work, leading before clinching hard and breaking free to start another attack, which seemed at odds with the majority of the press present who saw it as a draw.
On 14 June, at the St Nicholas Arena, Manhattan, NYC, New York, an over-the-weight Britton again risked his title against Lewis (144¼) before coming through following a ten-round press draw.
