1917-06-25 (142lbs) Ted Kid Lewis w pts 20 Jack Britton, Westwood Field, Dayton, Ohio, USA. Referee: Lou Bauman. With both men inside the agreed 142lbs at 3pm, and with all the leading claimants disposed of, this contest should be recognised as the one that finally cleared up the long-standing world title mess. The fight itself saw Lewis make the running before going into a clear lead, and although Britton scored a knockdown in the final round it was not enough to offset the former’s good work. This time round, with Lewis being particularly effective with the left as he looked to deal with Britton’s boring-in tactics, the steady volley of blows to the head saw him home. Summarising, Lewis, who took over from Britton on the referee’s decision, was credited with winning seven rounds to five, with eight even.
