1919-06-26 (142/145lbs) Jack Britton nd-l pts 12 Jack Perry, The Baseball Park, Cumberland, Maryland, USA. Promoted by the local athletic club, with this being a return match with the 142lbs title at stake, Perry’s second crack at the championship in two months saw the challenger almost there according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. As in their previous contest, Britton stayed mainly on the defensive, countering with lefts and rights to the head, while Perry threw himself at the champion in the opening four rounds. In the fifth, after chasing Perry down, Britton rocked his man with a tremendous right to the jaw before dropping him for ‘nine’ with a body shot. Revitalised in the sixth, Perry came back strongly, giving as good as he got, to take the final session by a big margin as he went looking for a kayo win.
Another two fights which had championship status attached, despite being made at 148lbs, saw Britton take on Johnny Griffiths (nd-w pts 15 at the Auditorium, Canton, Ohio on 4 July) and Al Doty (nd-w rsc 2 at Fayette Field, Connellsville, Pennsylvania on 9 July), while the press verdict in an eight-round no-decision contest against Ted Kid Lewis (at the Armory AA, Jersey City, New Jersey on 28 July), with both men inside 145lbs at the 3pm weigh-in, went Britton’s way.
