1919-11-21 (158lbs) Mike O'Dowd nd-drew 10 Mike Gibbons, The Auditorium, St Paul, Minnesota, USA. Referee: Curley Ulrich. According to the New York Times the two men, both from St Paul, entered the ring inside 158lbs in what looked like being a classic. It was the master boxer, Gibbons, versus his former pupil, O’Dowd. And to win O'Dowd's title the older man by eight years would have to score an inside-the-distance victory. After boxing well during the opening couple of rounds, Gibbons was cut over left eye in the third, an injury that changed the course of the fight, and after breaking his right hand in the seventh there was no chance of victory. While neither man failed to get close to scoring a knockdown, it was Gibbons’ skill that saw him capable of boxing on the inside and at range up against O’Dowd’s aggression that made it difficult for the press to determine a winner.
