1922-02-22 Bryan Downey w pts 12 Frank Carbone, The Auditorium, Canton, Ohio, USA - OHIO. Billed for the Ohio version of the 160lbs title, with both men reportedly inside at the 3pm weigh-in, Downey held on to his claim at the weight when he easily mastered Carbone, winning nine rounds and drawing two on the scorecards. Time after time Downey connected with Carbone’s jaw and stomach, but the only apparent damage seemed to be the cut over the latter’s left eye. From the opening bell, Downey generally poked away with the left to head and body before cutting loose with right hands, while Carbone, who amazed all and sundry with his toughness, appeared to have no defence.

On 13 March, at the Tomlinson Hall, Indianapolis, Indiana, Downey risked his 160lbs title claim when he again took on Carbone, this time outside the jurisdiction of the Ohio Boxing Commission. Carbone collected the ten-round decision according to the press.
