1928-02-06 Frankie Genaro w pts 10 Frenchy Belanger, The Coliseum, Toronto, Canada - NBA. Referee: Lou Marsh. Fast of feet and hand, Genaro (112) finally got his hands on an official version of the world title after spending over seven years and 83 fights as a pro following his Olympic title win in 1920. Genaro was far too smart for Belanger (110¼), whose only hope would have been a kayo. Controlling the fight, Genaro gave Belanger a boxing lesson, doing all the leading with straight punches, tying him up at close quarters, making him miss, and beating him to the punch. Although the Canadian was outclassed, being defeated by such a wide margin, he was always looking to get his punches off. The unanimous decision of the judges surprised no one.
Following the fight efforts were being made to match Genaro against Izzy Schwartz in order to unify the title, but when that failed to materialise Genaro settled for an NBA defence in Toronto against Steve Rocco.
