1930-06-25 Maxie Rosenbloom w pts 15 Jimmy Slattery, Bison Stadium, Buffalo, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Patsy Haley. In this, the sixth meeting between the pair, and a contest that would unify the title, Rosenbloom (170½) was wise to his rival’s moves as he slapped and cuffed Slattery (166½) around for the full 15 rounds, his speed being a deciding factor. However, although the verdict was split the fact that Rosenbloom barely landed with the knuckle part of the glove caused much dissent among the 15,000 crowd. Interestingly, while two judges voted for Rosenbloom, the referee, who had almost been knocked out by one of the latter’s wild swings, voted for Slattery.
Despite losing twice to both Pete Latzo and Rosenbloom in successive fights, Larry Johnson came back strongly to take over The Ring magazine’s number-one spot in the ratings when defeating Fred Lenhart in September, maintaining that position until beaten by Lou Scozza in January 1931. Scozza would eventually get a crack at Rosenbloom some 13 fights later.
