1931-07-29 Pete Sanstol w pts 10 Eugene Huat, The Forum, Montreal, Canada - MONTREAL. Referee: Bert Schneider. A few days before the fight was due to take place, Dave Lumiansky, the manager of Panama Al Brown, the NBA champion, threatened to place an injunction on the fight being billed for the world title on the grounds that Brown was the ‘official’ champion and his recognition was being watered down. Despite that, the fight went ahead for the Montreal version of the title after an agreement had been reached on Brown defending the NBA title against the winner in Montreal within 28 days, in return for 37½% of the gate or a guaranteed $7,500.
Although Sanstol (117½) defeated Huat (117½) on points it was not a great fight, with many thinking that the champion, who was down in the eighth, lucky to get the split decision. However, the two judges who voted for Sanstol claimed that the Frenchman missed with more punches than he landed, hence their verdict.
