1936-10-13 Sixto Escobar w co 1 (15) Indian Quintana, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA – NY/NBA. Referee: Arthur Donovan. The fight had hardly started when Escobar (118) landed a terrific right-hander on the challenger’s jaw, a punch that finished the contest there and then. Worryingly, Quintana (117½), who was counted out on the 1.49 mark, was in a coma for over an hour before he came round.

Escobar’s next defence would be against Lou Salica, the man he had won the title from. Since their previous meeting, Salica had recorded wins over Tuffy Pierpont, Small Montana, Henry Hook, Sammy Garcia, Joe Mendiola, Mauricio Seria, drawn with Hook, Jack Sharkey Jr and Bobby Leyvas, but lost to Tony Marino and Nicky Jerome (twice).
