1937-05-11 Freddie Steele w co 3 (15) Frank Battaglia, Civic Auditorium, Seattle, Washington, USA - NY/NBA. Referee: Tommy Clark. With Steele (156) originally booked to defend his title against Ken Overlin, after the latter arrived in Seattle and was taken ill with an attack of jaundice Battaglia (159¾) was drafted in. Taking the fight to Steele, and despite being dropped for ‘nine’ just 31 seconds into the opening session by a left to the jaw, Battaglia really shook his man up in the second round, having him on the verge of a knockout before being dropped himself by a vicious left hook and fast right to the head. At the count of ‘eight’ the bell came to Battaglia’s aid, but it did not stop him tearing out for the third, looking to finish Steele with one of his big rights. That was before a bombardment of blows, followed by a crushing left hook, left him flat on his face to be counted out with 34 seconds on the clock.
