1939-09-06 Maxie Berger w co 3 (10) Felix Garcia, The Forum, Montreal, Canada - MONTREAL. Referee: Micky McGowan. Billed for the Montreal Boxing Commission’s version of the title, Berger (140) successfully defended his claim against Garcia (140) after quickly getting down to business when flooring his rival towards the end of the first round with a cracking right cross to the jaw. Back on his feet the Puerto Rican was outclassed from then on as Berger took advantage of every opening, and in the third a crashing right uppercut sent Garcia down to be counted out on the 1.31 mark.
Berger failed to capitalise on his new title, moving his operating base to New York in search of welterweight honours.
Meantime, following a seven-round retirement win over California Jackie Wilson (135½) on 22 November 1940 at the Legion Stadium, Los Angeles, California, Quentin Baby Breese (138½) laid claim to the title. Although having little support, Breese was matched against Harry Weekly in July 1941 to decide the Louisianan version of the junior welterweight championship, for what it was worth.
