1940-06-20 Joe Louis w rsc 8 (15) Arturo Godoy, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Billy Cavanagh. A return battle saw Godoy (201¼) doing very much as did last time for the opening six rounds, while the champion appeared more focused in trying to keep the Chilean at bay with right uppercuts and solid lefts to the body. In the sixth Godoy was at his best when catching Louis (199) with some heavy blows, but in the seventh the tide began to turn as the challenger tired. After chopping away at Godoy, Louis finally dropped his opponent for the first time in his career, having battered him with a barrage of rights and lefts. Coming out for the eighth Louis now had the bit between the teeth, and after rocking Godoy with a volley of blows to the head a right to the jaw decked the latter for ‘eight’ face down. Getting up in a dazed state, when Godoy was eventually smashed down again the referee halted proceedings at 1.24 of the session. It was not over as far as Godoy was concerned, as he leaped to his feet and tried to continue before being made aware that he had already lost.
