1966-06-14 Walter McGowan w pts 15 Salvatore Burruni, The Arena, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Harry Gibbs. In clearly outpointing Burruni (110), the little Scot followed in the footsteps of fellow Scots, Johnny Hill, Benny Lynch and Jackie Paterson, in winning the world title at the weight. Despite being cut at the side of the right eye, McGowan (111¾) skilfully stayed on the outside peppering the champion with left jabs, while Burruni tried desperately to land countering blows. The final bell ended with the referee holding McGowan’s hand aloft after one of the best displays of classic left-hand boxing seen from a small man.
