1969-09-07 Shozo Saijo w co 2 (15) Jose Luis Pimentel, Makomonal Arena, Sapporo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Ken Morita. Retaining his title for the second time, Saijo (126) started cautiously enough, as did Pimentel (125½), before landing a hard left hook and chasing his rival around the ring with a two-fisted attack until the bell. Getting away quickly in the second Saijo drove in two hard straight rights to the body, and then after switching his attack to the head a cracking left hook to the jaw saw Pimentel counted out at 1.29 of the round.
Although not rated in The Ring magazine’s top ten, the South American champion, Godfrey Stevens, would be Saijo’s next challenger. A tough and determined fighter with no little skill, Stevens had won 68 of 75 contests, having beaten Miguel Herrera (twice), Ricardo Moreno, Antonio Herrera, Bobby Valdez, Jose Jimenez and Don Johnson along the way.
